New Year’s resolutions, yes or no?

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

New Year’s resolutions. Do you do them? Do you not do them? As we are now about a week into 2019, I figured I would do a quick post about New Year’s resolutions.

I used to do them. Not every year, but most years, yes. But, the more I thought about it, the more I’m like, “Nope, I’m not going to do a formal resolution because if I don’t reach the goal, then I’ll feel like I failed, and that sends me into a bit of a depressive tailspin.

So, this year there will be no formal resolutions. “So what about the whole ‘I’m going to wear earrings everyday in 2019′ thing, Sue? Isn’t that a New Year’s resolution?” I’m glad you asked! Nope, it’s not a formal resolution. Yes, it’s something I decided to do, but if I miss a day here and there, I won’t sweat it like I would if it was an official resolution.

IMHO, it’s all about not having the pressure. For me, if I feel under pressure to do something or be someone, then nothing less than perfection is acceptable. And, ya know what? I find that I’m more successful when I don’t have that pressure.

Goals in life

So, you might be thinking, “But, we all need goals in life.” And, my thinking, which has changed as I’ve aged, is more that I want to live and to enjoy my life. Not having the pressure to “do” or “be” makes life so much more enjoyable for me, and as a result, I am more productive overall.

Some live for the competition of things. And, for much of my life, I’ve competed either against others or against myself. Some people thrive on competition. It gets them pumped up which is what works for them. That’s cool for them.

Now, does this mean I’ve turned into a total slacker? No way. Just ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you I’m quite the opposite. I just happen to now be the type of person who thrives when the pressure is off. It’s like the song, Que Sera Sera. Whatever will be, will be.

So, back to the whole New Year’s resolution thing.

There are a number of things that I am doing and they happen to coincide with the new year. And, I’m sure you’ll all find out about each of them in time. But, they’re not official New Year’s resolutions. They are just, well, things I want to do, ya know? And, if they happen in 2019 then great! If they end up happening in 2020, then great! If they don’t happen at all, then that’s perfectly fine, too! I’m going to enjoy myself and see what comes of 2019.

What about you? Do you do New Year’s resolutions? If so, what is it about them that gets you pumped to do them? If not, then what is your reason for not having an official resolution? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Everyone’s opinion is just that – their opinion. Mine is right for me, and yours is right for you. 🙂
